Everyone has their own take on Whitney Houston who died this past weekend. My own take will come later this week.
However, today I want to ask people who is the artist/singer/band who speaks to your soul.
For me at this time it is Adele. I love her voice, her demeanor, the passion with which she sings. While I like Katy Perry, Madonna and Lady Gaga (They have wonderful voices when you listen to their recordings), their performance becomes style over substance. Although, I have to had it to Katy. Setting fire to an ice sculpture of a man after the divorce is final is a great send off to the ex.
But when you consider the money and awards that Adele has earned since her break-up songs on her “21” album, perhaps there are other ways of celebrating that break-up. Then again, her ex tried to demand royalties because of the inspiration he gave her. Yeah, that is not happening.
I am also becoming a big fan of Foo Fighters and David Grohl. Her is his acceptance speech from last night.
“This is a great honour, because this record was a special record for our band. Rather than go to the best studio in the world down the street in Hollywood and rather than use all of the fanciest computers that money can buy, we made this one in my garage with some microphones and a tape machine…
“To me this award means a lot because it shows that the human element of music is what’s important. Singing into a microphone and learning to play an instrument and learning to do your craft, that’s the most important thing for people to do.
“It’s not about being perfect, it’s not about sounding absolutely correct, it’s not about what goes on in a computer. It’s about what goes on in here [your heart] and what goes on in here [your head].”
After his acceptance speech, the husband and I looked at our aspiring drummer, saying “what he just said that is what you need to do.”
So who is inspiring you?
Nicki Minaj, Katy Perry, and Lady Gaga are just Madonna wanna-be’s. I was very disappointed in Katy Perry especially. I thought she had more class. Like you said, as amazing as their voices are, they lack style.
Especially Nicki. She showed up looking like Little Red Riding Hood with the Pope.
I really wasn’t an Adele fan. I didn’t really think her style of singing was my taste. Very bluesy, R&B, burlesque genre. But after listening to her more and seeing who she really is, she’s warming up to me. She does have a fantastic voice!
I would have to say Adele has changed my mind about her music. I may even buy the CD.
I was given a DVD of her concert at Albert Hall. So great!!!
Thanks for honoring the artists/singers – an anticipated showcase event was overshadowed by the tragedy of Whitney Houston.
When you listen to Adele and Jennifer Hudson, it is clear there are other ready to take her place.
Agreed. Both are excellent singers worthy of recognition – I only hope these two don’t forever live under the ” trying to fill the shoes of Whitney Houston” shadow all their lives. I love Whitney’s music – but watching her life was like watching a train wreck about to happen. The media is creating this story now. Placing her in the “artists died too young” group is wrong – she was 43 with a teenage child – not like the others who lived so briefly. (Winehouse, Morrison, Joplin, James Dean). OK I said I wasn’t going to write about this – and here’s this. (Sitting down now)…enjoyed your post
Whitney was not too young although she was 48. She is only a few months older than myself and our children (her only child and my oldest) are close in age. I can’t believe she is gone, I am not surprised it actually happened. I think before 30 is too young but her life is a sad trainwreck. I hope young performers remember her so they know what not to do.
Whitney certainly was an outstanding talent – loved her music. Hope her daughter has some solid well balanced people around here that have the kid’s best interests at heart – don’t want a further tragedy. Wishing peace for them both
I did not watch the Grammys, and I am so behind the times when it comes to what is hot now. All that said, David Grohl is a good man. (And, yes I know his music, current band and former band). His acceptance speech is dead-on, and I hope the youngins’ listen and follow his advice. At least I know your son will. 🙂
When we asked, my son was able to repeat the last part today. SCORE!!!!!
YES! I absolutely loved his speech because it was exactly true. Music has gotten too far away from actual music. No synthesized beats, no magic voice correctors, no flashy costumes… just singing and playing an instrument!
That might be why they cut off his mike. Then Dave yells out “long Live Rock and Roll.” I have become a fan.
Can I be an old fuddy duddy and say Sinatra still does and I guess always will. As to female artist, I’m going all the way back to Vera Lynn, but I’ll give a special salute to one we just lost, Etta James. I have listened to her a great deal through the years and have never been disappointed. HF
I believe Sinatra may never go out of style.
An older fuddy duddy says Sinatra, Bennett and Gordon Lightfoot
What about Sarah Vaughn? You used to listen to her a lot as well.
OK, Sarah Vaughn, Dinah Washington, June Christy, several others you kids have never heard of.
